Hello and welcome to the Collected Edition – a comic book podcast where we explore celebrated story-arcs from comics and creators throughout the entirety of history.

This time on the program we discuss Black Panther by Christopher Priest: The Complete Collection Volume 1. In 1998 when writer Christopher Priest reintroduced the hero as part of the slightly more adult “Marvel Knights” line, in this critically acclaimed series that ran until 2003. The stories we will be discussing today are half political thriller, half crime drama and half buddy comedy. I know that’s a lot of halves – but there’s a lot going on here.

Together with art by Mark Texeira and Vince Evans, Priest reinvented Black Panther. He gave the character an edge and added political and social satire to his story while deftly weaving decades old story-lines flawlessly into the narrative. He makes T’Challa a fully rounded and complex character torn between his obligations as a Head of State, a defender of the people, a team member and a friend.

This run changed the way we think of Black Panther. It added political intrigue to the already established Afro-futurism of Wakanda, it changed the way his supporting characters were portrayed and perceived and added new elements – like the Dora Milaje –  that have become staples in the series ever since.

In addition we also discuss why comics are good. Its an impromptu discussion as we didn’t have a topic chosen but it was actually a lot of fun, possibly informative, hopefully entertaining. You’ll have to tell us in the comments.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.
